I'm fascinated by the stories behind the tunes we play. After studying music at university, I went on to complete a Master's degree and then a PhD in Historical Musicology. My research has taken me into old tune books, forgotten manuscripts and family archives, (including my own - the serious chap with the fiddle is my great-great grandfather), uncovering melodies that have been played for generations. I still love researching traditional music today, and every now and then you'll find a tune in the club with a particularly interesting story behind it.

Over the years I've been fortunate to learn from and work alongside some outstanding musicians. In recent years I've studied with the wonderful Martin Hayes, whose thoughtful approach to rhythm, phrasing and expression has had a profound influence on my own playing. Like many musicians, I'm always learning, always listening and always discovering something new.

A few years ago my life took an unexpected turn when I was diagnosed with a rare inherited eye condition that gradually took away my central vision. I’ve had to stop driving, can no longer read printed sheet music and many of the everyday things I'd always taken for granted suddenly became much more difficult. But what never changed was my love of music.

In many ways it became even more important. Music has always brought me friendship, purpose and joy, and I realised there must be lots of other people who simply wanted a regular reason to pick up their instrument, learn something new and enjoy making music with others. That's why I created Becky's Tune Club.

My teaching is centred around learning by ear, partly because I had to embrace this due to my vision, and also because I believe it's one of the best ways to develop confidence, musicality and a real connection with a tune. But I also understand that many people like to refer to the written music, so I always provide links to the notation on The Session for anyone who finds that helpful.

My favourite thing about teaching is seeing someone play a tune with confidence that they never thought they'd be able to learn.

Whether you play fiddle, whistle, flute, mandolin, banjo or another melody instrument, my aim is to create a welcoming, encouraging place where you can continue learning without pressure. You don't need to be an advanced player. You simply need a love of traditional music and a willingness to keep improving, one tune at a time.
